Oval face shape
Slightly longer than wide, with the cheekbones as the widest point and a jaw that curves gently towards the chin. Usually described as the most balanced shape.
What an oval face is
An oval face is roughly one and a quarter times longer than it is wide. The forehead is slightly wider than the jaw, the cheekbones are the broadest part and the jawline curves without hard angles. The chin is rounded rather than pointed or square.
How to tell
- Length is clearly greater than width, but only moderately.
- Cheekbones are the widest point of the face.
- Forehead is a little wider than the jawline.
- Jaw and chin curve softly — no sharp corners.
Hairstyles
- Most cuts work. Keep some volume on top so the face doesn't look flat.
- Heavy, straight fringes can shorten the face more than you want.
- Short crops and longer layered styles both balance well.
Glasses
- Medium-width frames keep the proportions intact: rectangles, wayfarers, round.
- Very oversized frames throw off a shape that was already balanced.
Beard and facial hair
Short to medium, following the jawline. A long, full beard adds vertical length that an oval face doesn't need; a trimmed beard with a clean cheek line keeps it proportioned.
The oval shape is flexible, not "the best". What suits you also depends
on your hair texture, the density of your beard and your own taste.
